Granville Swope
First Tennis Team: NJJTL (New Jersey Junior Tennis League) we were pretty good for 10 and under. Clay courters all the way. We moved to Southern Cal in 1972. It was the first time I had ever seen a hard court. Also remember my lungs hurting after playing tennis; my freind casually told me it was the smog. First time I'd heard of smog.
High School: 4 years at La Canada. Annual CIF team and individual contender - no titles. Usually lost to annual powerhouse San Marino.
Junior College: Two years at Pasadena City College under the tutelage of coach Myron Tarkanian - better known as the PCC football coach and even better known as the brother of noted UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian. Good results for JC: Rio Hondo Conference Team Champs 1979 and Doubles Title w/ John Tyrell 1979. Arizona State University team 1981 with Myron McNamara. It was here that I learned I had better find a career off the tennis court.
Tennis instruction: First formal instruction with Linda Crosby and the Pasadena Tennis Patrons 1973-1975 Many years at the Big Bear Tennis Ranch 1977-1982. A few years teaching for clubs and municipalites as second income.
Senior Rankings:
30-35's
1992 #20 National, Top ten in So. Cal.
1993 #22 National, Top ten in So. Cal.
40-45's
2001 #14 in So.Cal.

Tennis highlights:
Winning first trophy age 10
Winning three wood balls (1992, 1999, 2003)
*Enjoying the distinction of being the only man of wood to win on two surfaces (hard, grass).
Tennis goals yet unfilled:
To win a gold ball (USTA still has a 90's event, right?)
Personal highlights:
Married my lovely bride Marsha 9/20/96 (and she thought I didn't remember.) I'm reminded regularly by Kevin that Marsha's acceptance was a moment of weakness. I'll just say right up front that despite my three wood balls, Marsha and my three kids represent my best work!
For fun: Hiking Califonia's beautiful landscapes with my buddies Jamo, Dan, Bob:
Mount Whitney, San Gorgonio, San Jacinto, Muir Trail, Pheiffer Redwoods
and hot springs, Yosemite are a few highlights (come to think of it I
need a vacation!)
