The Finalists: Schartman/Frazier with Chair Umpire Mike Graham, Frost/Heinemann
"The Woody's greatest come-from-behind victory." Joe Kells
With an earlier than usual start time of 8:30 Sunday morning, the gallery was thin with only a dozen or so spectators...and a missing finalist! The twenty minute default rule was put into effect. Joe Schartman arrived with three minutes to spare. Woody 18 was under way...
After dropping the first set and an opening break in the 2nd, it appeared Frost would have no trouble catching that flight 2:00p to Austria out of San Diego. By all indications this final was heading to a routine victory for the seasoned veteran and 3-time Woody champ Kevin Frazier and the long awaited first wood ball for Joe Schartman, a regular visitor to the semi's and final's of Woody past.
Only history will know if the footfault warning at 6-4, 1-0 following the early Frost break in the 2nd, would play a factor in the final outcome. Despite two break points following the warning, Schartman was able to hold serve and eventally own a 4-1 lead in the second, all but ensuring victory. And then things began to unravel with Frost and Heinemann grabbing two more breaks, and Heinemann holds serve through five break points to serve out the second set at 7-5.
There were several contested calls between these two rivals and at one point the chair umpire overuled Frazier on break point. When asked about the call at the post match press conference, Chair Umpire Mike Graham admitted "it's tough to overule when there's chalk flyin', but the call was correct."
The third set was a break-fest, with both teams having opportunities to serve out the match. After four conscutive breaks, Sean Frost got his second opportunity to serve it out, deciding enough was enough, I can still make that flight!
Congratulations Geoff and Sean!
